Casting Distortion Analysis

The casting process is complex, prone to many complications that can compromise any cast component. Finding out how to solve these by trial and error for a new product is both time-consuming and expensive, resulting in a longer time to market and higher development costs which can greatly increase the risk involved in creating new products.

Casting Distortion Analysis

ESI boasts a comprehensive suite of casting applications that address these issues, modelling the entire process from filling to solidification and including complete casting distortion analysis. By modelling the casting process in such detail, costly errors are avoided and proactive decision-making is supported.

Casting distortion analysis and other casting defects

ESI’s Casting Simulation Suite ProCAST provides comprehensive modelling of casting defects at every stage in the process. In solidification, the application identifies both micro porosity and gas porosity, and also considers piping and hot spot issues. The pouring process being the source of numerous nonconformities, the application suite covers problems linked to air entrapment, cold shuts, core gases, inclusions, mis-runs, oxides, surface defects and turbulences. ProCAST also includes stress analysis, to capture the effect of residual stresses such as hot tears, cold cracks, surface cracks, die fatigue and hence make a complete casting distortion analysis. Finally, the application encompasses metallurgy specifications, such as freckle, mechanical properties, segregation and stray grain.
